For the third time in as many weeks, students of the Mahdia Secondary School were Tuesday gripped by a paranormal activity that at least one religious said was an episode of demonic possession.
Region 8 (Potaro-Siparuni) officials said 20 students-mainly girls between the ages of 13 and 16 years old- around 11:30 AM began screaming and collapsing. Several of them were rushed to the Mahdia Hospital where a doctor concluded that nothing was medically wrong with them. The Regional official said two of the girls even jumped through hospital windows.
There have been similar occurrences at schools in Regions One (Barima-Waini) and Region Five (Mahaica-West Berbice) in recent months. Pastor Aaron Marks of the Full Gospel Fellowship told Demerara Waves Online News (www.demwaves.com) that as far as he knew only nine girls displayed demonic behaviour which he attributed to sexual activity and possibly abuse.
It seems a more plausable explanation for this behaviour is mass hysteria.
Mass hysteria, sometimes referred to as mass psychogenic illness or epidemic hysteria, the spontaneous manifestation of the same or similar hysterical physical symptoms by more than one person. A common manifestation of mass hysteria occurs when a group of people believe they are suffering from a similar disease or ailment.
