Skeptic News: Huge increase in parents who refuse to vaccinate children

From: 3AW 693

The medical community has called for the anti-immunisation lobby to wind back its efforts after figures showed the number of parents refusing to vaccinate their children has increased six fold.

The Academy of Science, supported by the Australian Medical Association, is today launching a 20-page booklet to explain the benefits of immunisation and try to debunk common myths. Neil Mitchell has said that in his non-expert view, the actions taken by parents who refuse to vaccinate their children is ‘tantamount to child abuse’.

President of the Australian Vaccination Network, Meryl Dorey told Neil Mitchell the government and media had worked to ‘actively suppress’ information regarding the risks immunisation posed, and said she supported people’s right to make their own choice. However President of the Australian Medical Association, Dr Steve Hambleton, told Neil Mitchell the benefits of immunisation far outweighed the risks.

Sir Gustav Nossal, an Australian research biologist specialising in immunology and the 2000 Australian of the Year, had this to say:

The anti-vaccination lobby played a major role in the outbreak of measles, mumps and rubella in the UK.

…along came one researcher with a totally fallacious claim that the vaccine causes autism.

It turns out the incidence of autism in people who have had the MMR vaccine is identical to that of people who have not had it.
But the anti-vaccination lobby startled parents so much the vaccination rate, which was up to 93 per cent, plummeted to 60-70 per cent in different parts of the UK.

What was the end result? Outbreaks of all three diseases which are not yet under control. This is a tragedy triggered by ignorance.

What the likes of Meryl Dorey have to realise, despite their earnest beliefs to the contrary, the vaccine is better than the disease.

One Response to Skeptic News: Huge increase in parents who refuse to vaccinate children

  1. “The medical community has called for the anti-immunisation lobby to wind back its efforts”
Oh dear! Why should they, since they think they are right?
“The Academy of Science… is today launching a 20-page booklet to explain the benefits of immunization”
Again, an example of how not to. Anti-vaxx is a conspiracy theory, and an expensively produced glossy booklet will merely confirmed the existence of a conspiracy. And 20 pages! Who do they think is going to read that?
I remember one advertisement from many years ago, which perhaps we could revive. Toddler: “Mummy, did you remember to get my hearing aid batteries?” Text: No, she did not remember the hearing aid batteries, just like she did not remember the measles vaccination.
