A 53-year-old man has been arrested in south Delhi’s Munirka area for practising allopathic medicine without having requisite medical qualification, police said on Saturday.
According to Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south), Suresh Verma is not a registered medical practitioner, but was running a clinic named ‘Santosh Clinic’ at Munirka village.
“The action was taken over guidelines issued by Delhi Medical Council to curb activities of quack medical practitioners in the Capital,” Sharma said.
A raid was conducted at Santosh Clinic where Verma claimed to be an MBBS doctor. A police team asked him to produce his medical degree, which he failed to do so.
“Later, during interrogation he broke down and disclosed that he did not have any medical degree. He was arrested and incriminatory documents were recovered from his clinic,” Sharma added.
A case under the Delhi Medical Council Act was lodged with Vasant Vihar police station in what has become something of a worrying common theme in Indian Medicine. Where those who practice natural, traditional and alternative treatment modalities believe they should be able to practice evidence based medicine without the necessary training and qualifications.
