A 45-year-old Ayurvedic doctor was arrested on Wednesday for stabbing his wife to death and attacking his eight-year-old daughter on his tenth wedding anniversary. The incident was reported from West Delhi’s Hari Nagar area on Tuesday night, police said.
According to police, Hari Om Mehta was reportedly suffering from depression after his three-month-old son, who was born premature, died in June this year.
Police said Mehta married Ravinder Kaur (30) 10 years ago.
“After his son’s death in June, he was allegedly upset with his wife as he held her responsible for the boy’s death,” a police officer said.
“On the night of August 28, the couple came home after celebrating their anniversary. They had an argument over the same issue following which Mehta stabbed Kaur thrice on the neck with a kitchen knife. She died on the spot. Meanwhile, his daughter, who was sleeping in another room, woke up and witnessed the incident. This scared him and he stabbed his daughter on her head and forehead,” the officer said.
“His wife died on the spot. Their eight-year-old daughter has been admitted to Deen Dyal Hospital and is said to be critical. Mehta has been arrested and a case of murder and attempt to murder has been registered against him at the Hari Nagar police station,” the officer said.
“Fearing arrest, Mehta ransacked the house and broke open the almirahs to make it look like a case of robbery. He went and told his neighbours that two people barged into his house and robbed him off his belongings and requested them to make a PCR call. He told the neighbours that as his wife tried to resist and the robbers murdered her and also attacked his daughter,” the officer said.
