SINGAPORE – A 40-year-old fortune teller who raped a teenager on the pretext that he was performing rites to rid the demons possessing her was sentenced to 12 years’ jail and six strokes of the cane.
Siah Kwang Yung had met the victim’s mother on Sept 5 last year at his makeshift fortune-telling stall outside a Chinese temple along Waterloo Street, the court heard. No details that could lead to the identification of the victim can be published, according to a gag order.
He told her a demon had possessed her body and causing her to suffer from bad luck.
Siah added that there were also demons in her flat and volunteered to help her chase them away.
One week later, Siah purportedly went into a trance-like state while he was in the flat and claimed that the 19-year-old victim was in grave danger.
He then locked himself in the room with the girl and raped her.
Siah could have been jailed up to 20 years and fined or caned.
Siah Kwang Yung is not the first to abuse others faith in their abilities to sexually assault them and skeptics news fears he will not be the last.
