Skeptic News: Religious leader gets probation in sex case

A Utah judge has ordered three years’ probation for a 38-year-old religious sect leader who says he had sex with a minor at another leader’s direction.

Geody Harman of the Church of the Firstborn of the General Assembly of Heaven was sentenced last week and he also testified against Terrill Dalton church president. Harman says he had an “impression” that he should sleep with a 15-year-old girl. He says he consulted Dalton, who told him the impression was from God and he should act on it. Dalton was convicted of rape and sentenced to two consecutive terms of five years to life in prison.

Dalton called himself the “Holy Ghost” while Harman was often referred to as “God in the flesh.” In a prior hearing, Dalton’s daughter testified that she was promised she would receive blessings if she had sex with the two men and felt extreme pressure from her father and those in his church to comply.

Harman, who has been charged with rape, has been offered a plea deal that will allow him to plead guilty to a lesser charge and avoid further jail or prison time in exchange for his testimony, but he has yet to officially enter a plea.

The Church of the Firstborn and the General Assembly of Heaven was originally organized in Magna, Utah by former members of the LDS Church. It practices polygamy and the law of consecration. Its leader, Terrill R. Dalton, purports to be the Holy Ghost and the father of Jesus.

The Ross Institute Internet Archives for the Study of Destructive Cults, Controversial Groups and Movements lists several more of the allegations made against this Mormom Sect here.
