Skeptic News: Manufacturing issues with supplements

20120702-192413.jpg<Federal inspections of companies that make dietary supplements — from multivitamins and calcium chews to capsules of echinacea and bodybuilding powders — reveal serious and widespread manufacturing problems in a $28 billion industry that sells products consumed by half of all Americans.

The US Food and Drug Administration found manufacturing violations in half of the 450 sites it inspected last year. Firms failed to verify what ingredients went into their pills and failed to inspect final batches for quality and safety.

One manufacturer reportedly operated from a factory infested with rodents and rat faeces.

In 2008 at least 400 people were poisoned by Selenium from supplements
