Skeptic News: Flying squirrel poo medicine coming to Oz

20120629-014308.jpgAustralian quarantine officials have given the green light to therapeutic poo imports, meaning animal dung could be coming to a shop near you.

Certain animal droppings have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for many years. However these “medicines” have been unavailable to Australian consumers due to tough quarantine rules.

But that changed this week, with officials altering the rules for medicinal and therapeutic products containing animal excrement. Now dung based remedies can be imported to Australia but only after being blasted with gamma radiation to protect biosecurity.

As with much TCM the efficacy of dung based medicines is highly dubious. Quite what TCM consumers will think of using gamma blasted “medicines” remains to be seen.
