Skeptic News: Homeopathy camp for Dengue

In India the Government Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital at Tirumangalam recently ran two free camps to try and popularise the use of homeopathic pills as a means of preventing dengue fever.

A.Gopalakrishnan, Principal in-charge of the college, led a team of homeopaths in distributing free pills to 4,502 people inside the Goripalayam dargah.

Dr.Gopalakrishnan is quoted as claiming:

“It is a very effective medicine and we are distributing it free of cost. It has to be taken for three consecutive days,”

Dengue Fever is virus-caused disease that is spread by mosquito bites it begins with a sudden high fever, often as high as 104 – 105 degrees Fahrenheit, 4 to 7 days after the infection.

A flat, red rash may appear over most of the body 2 – 5 days after the fever starts. A second rash, which looks like the measles, appears later in the disease. Infected people may have increased skin sensitivity and are very uncomfortable. Other symptoms include: Fatigue, Headache (especially behind the eyes), Joint aches, Muscle aches, Nausea and Swollen lymph nodes.

There is no specific treatment for the disease and the condition generally lasts a week or more. Although uncomfortable, dengue fever is not deadly. People with the condition should fully recover.

There is no evidence to suggest that homeopathy can do anything to prevent or treat dengue fever but people may mistake the natural course of the illness for the remedies working.

  1. Acleron says:

Dengue fever can develop into Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever and even when treated has a 1-2.5% mortality rate. Without treatment, the mortality rate is 20%.

So these quacks are relying on the self limiting aspects of DF to claim their spurious success and will probably kill a proportion of the DHF victims by delaying their treatment while mumbling nonsense terms such as ‘aggravation’.

Indian doctors and researchers must be terribly frustrated at the amount of power the quacks have in their country.

  2. The situation in India is very interesting. From my limited knowledge it would seem alternative and traditional systems of medicine are afforded a lot more official respect by the government an health authorities.

Healers and gurus command a degree of respect above what might be expected with some even running political campaigns!
