Skeptic News: Faith Healing AIDS deaths

The BBC have reported that at least three people in London with HIV have died after they stopped taking life saving drugs on the advice of their Evangelical Christian pastors.

The individuals died after they were told that their faith in God would heal them and that they did not need antireroviral drugs.

HIV prevention charity African Health Policy Network (AHPN) has said it believes that a growing number of London churches have been advising people that the power of prayer will “cure” their HIV. AHPN believe that the Synagogue Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) may be one of those involved in the practice. The church is headed by Pastor T B Joshua, Nigeria’s third richest clergyman, according to a recent Forbes richlist.

On the church website it was claimed that

“Mrs Badmus proudly displays her two different medical records confirming she is 100% free from HIV-Aids following the prayer of Pastor T B Joshua.”

While we are perhaps aware that such faith healing practices are common elsewhere in the world it is important to remember that such practices exist in the UK and although we perhaps view “faith healers” as a soft target or low hanging fruit it’s important to address their claims as they can do very real harm.
