Skeptic News: Rapture index at all time high

According to some sources the chances of the apocalypse are at an all time high.

Signs such as dead birds dropping from the sky, dead fish washing up on the shore and 200 dead cows being reported in Wisconsin. In addition to this people are taking a rise in secularism, atheism and “occult” believes as concrete signs that the rapture and the end times are fast approaching and the “Rapture index” has hit an all time high.

The Rapture index is part of “rapture ready” an Evangelical Christian site founded by Todd Strandberg in 1995, dedicated to the idea that the Rapture will soon occur, and that non-Christians should be warned. The site tracks the real-world occurrence of events prophesied in the Bible, and uses these to calculate what it sees as the approach of the Rapture.

The index includes a numerical measurement of world events and trends in light of conservative Christian views on Bible prophecy regarding the end times. This index lists a number of events and subjects, comments thereon, their influence (in points) and statistics of highs and lows by years and records.

According to web articles like “Pretrib Rapture Politics,” “Pretrib Rapture Diehards,” “Pretrib Rapture Dishonesty” and “The Rapture Index (Mad Theology),” the popular (mainly in America) rapture is a British import less than 200 years old. It was reportedly dreamed up by a young woman in Scotland in 1830 and didn’t become accepted by evangelicals in America until the early 20th century.
