Skeptic News: Dawkins banned from County Club

Richard Dawkins was due to speak at the Wyndgate Country Club in Rochester Hills, Michigan but the event,   arranged by the Center for Inquiry–Michigan (CFI), has been cancelled.

The club terminated it’s agreement after the owner saw an interview with Dawkins in which he discussed his new book, The Magic of Reality: How We Know What’s Really True. The owner of the club explained that he did not wish to associate with individuals such as Richard Dawkins or his philosophies. CFI attempted to resolve the issue amicably but their appeal were met with silence and the event will now be held elsewhere.

The Wyndgate is a privately owned establishment though it’s facilities are open to the public in certain cases. CIF believe that by refusing to let Dawkins speak the venue may be in contravention of  Title II of the Federal Civil Rights Law of 1964 which states that “open to the public” means

“all persons shall be entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, and accommodations of any place of public accommodation, as defined in this section, without discrimination or segregation on the ground of race, color, religion, or national origin.”
