Skeptic News: It's the end of the world as we know it

By Keir Liddle

There are those that believe recent world events have been predicted in end times prophecies and are a portent of the end of the world.

On social networking sites the theory that ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak is the Antichrist have recently been circulating accompanied by predictions that the end times are upon us. The arrival of Meseekh-Al-Deggal, as the anti-christ is known in Arabic, on Earth signals the beginning of the end of days during which scripture dictates everyone and everything will perish.

The apocalyptic theorists have noted that according to certain beliefs in Islam the ruling of Egypt by a leader whose first name is “Mohamed” and second name is “Hussein is a herald of doomsday. Murbaraks full name is Muhammad Hosni Sayyid Mubarak and his middle name “Hosni” is a variation of Hussein. Thus the ending of Mubaraks rule of Egypt has been seen as a sign that the end of time can be expected any day now.

Although for those who are concerned the most popular predictions suggest the the apocalypse should have started today with massive earthquakes caused by a rare planetary alignment. These have so far failed to materialise so we can perhaps hypothesis these end time predictions are on shaky ground.
